Last night I had the opportunity to head downtown and hang out with my long-time friend
Nathan Monk at
People for Urban Progress’s
studio 213 for a night of art, hip hop, and afterwards, a burger and coffee at Peppy Grill. Nathan’s art was killer and as usual there was always a crowd around his work. It’s awesome to see his style evolve and watch other people appreciate what this guy puts his time, money, and heart into.
Nathan works with found objects and forms delicious mixed media pieces that tend to make you stop and think. He focuses on re-purposing objects and recycling materials in new creative ways - which I think is really cool. This guy is for real.
He sells his work at very good prices (barely enough to cover his material cost and time, in my opinion), so if you’re looking for a unique gift idea check out his website and then email him to say hi (Prices aren’t listed on the website, but fall in the range of $20 - $100 for most items. Email him to inquire). He’s a nice, polite dude, who loves people - so give him a minute of your time and
check him out.
It was a great night overall, but the best part was chilling out at Peppy’s with Nate after the show - talking about this, that, and everything. Now, some photos.
The photos:
- Nathan (far right) talking with some folks about his work.
- Similar shot, landscape
- Artwork in the hallways of the studio
- More artwork in the hallways
- Artwork in the stairwell (did I mention this place is full of art?)
- Nathan with a sculpture in the hallway. (this thing startled me when I first turned the corner ha!)
- Me - looking rather serious
- Nathan at Peppy’s after the show (tired from a long night - more coffee please!)
- The view from our corner booth in Peppy’s
- A smaller panorama view
- The aftermath of the hip hop show (which concluded with an amazing hour-long freestyle cypher)
